European Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas said the body’s legal department had judged the draft paper agreed upon by the EU28 and Turkey on the refugee crisis on March 7 as being compliant with EU laws. Schinas stressed that the document was a draft which guarantees the rights of asylum seekers, while he echoed the assertions made by Commission President Junkcer earlier in the week that the agreement was in principle as ‘legally viable and a good choice’. On the matter of readmission of refugees to Turkey, Schinas underlined that the positive aspect of the draft agreement was the existence of suitable administrative structures and expedient, effective legal procedures. He added that it was up to the Greek authorities to organise effective legal procedures to accelerate the process of refugee registration and relocation.
