Reuters citing information from two politicians speaks of the capturing of an employee of the German intelligence service (BND) on charges of espionage on behalf of the USA.
The 31 year old man was arrested on suspicion of espionage on behalf of a foreign country, as reported in a statement of the Office of the German Advocate General.
If these charges be confirmed, it will be another blow to the relations of Berlin with Washington after revelations about massive phone tapping of German citizens, including Chancellor Merkel, by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).
According to Reuters the man in question has admitted that he gave information to a U.S. contact for the work of a special parliamentary panel over the revelations of Edward Snowden.
“The man that has been arrested is not a senior agent nor had direct contacts with the committee,” said one of the politicians to Reuters adding that the 31 year old gave the information voluntarily.
Merkel’s spokesman, Mr. Steffen Zaimpert stated for the issue that “we do not take lightly the issue of spying for foreign intelligence services.”
The German newspaper Bild in its the Saturday issue will publish an article in which it will be stated that the arrested was working as a double agent in the past two years and had stolen 218 confidential documents.
