Greece’s intelligence service behind phone-tapping, says Tagesspiegel for Wikileaks

According to the German newspaper, the conversation was tapped when IMF team was in Hilton hotel, in Athens

Newsroom April 4 11:40

The disagreement between IMF and EU was revealed by Wikileaks bringing to light a phone conversation between top two IMF officials, Poul Thomsen and Delia Velculescu, who are reportedly saying that they might push Greece to the brink of a credit event so as Greece would accept the strict measures it proposed.

German newspaper Tagesspiegel claims that the Greek intelligence service is behind the phone tapping of the conversation.

Many foreign media reports, however, point out that, this leak reveals two things: IMF’s strategy on Greek program and IMF’s mistrust in European institutions.

“Yiannis Roubatis has probably are among those who are happy now. The head of the Greek intelligence service, a man close to Tsipras, is considered the most logical source of the leak, which caused turmoil in the already troubled relationship of trust between Greece and its lenders”, says Tagesspiegel.

According to the German newspaper, the conversation was tapped when IMF team was in Hilton hotel, in Athens, and Velculescu called Thomsen at IMF headquarters in Washington and then it was posted on Wikileaks site.

The transcription of the name “Velculescu” as “Velkouleskou” proves that it was written by a Greek person, says the newspaper, while Wikileaks denied it on its Twitter account claiming responsibility for the misspelling.
