Foreign media reacts to breakdown of talks between Greece and creditors (photos)

A repeat of the 2015 ‘Greek drama’, but not as threatening

Newsroom April 28 08:18

The majority of the foreign press weighs in on the breakdown of talks between Greece and its creditors, pointing out the ‘Greek drama’ is a tiresome repeat of the 2015 situation.

Many international media outlets underline that the dangers of a Grexit has once again surfaced. Online German news portal ‘Spiegel’ notes that a ‘repeat of a new drama looms’. The site stresses Greece’s European creditors’ rejection of Greek PM Alexis Tsipras’s request for an EU Summit meeting shows EU creditors are reluctant to offer him a semblance of ‘cover’ so that he can ‘sell’ it as a triumphant negotiating tactic. The site warns that time is running out for Greece, adding that the current situation in Europe does not allow Tsipras to pose a threat to the rest of the EU.

‘The Guardian’ points out that Greece has entered into an ‘emergency state’ again, while the BBC underlines the rejection by Donald Tusk to Tsipras’s demand for a Summit meeting.

The ‘Financial Times’ says that signs indicate a repeat of the 2015 drama, with Greece’s lenders squabbling amongst themselves and Tsipras in a state of belligerence. It adds, however, that the EU and the IMF seem unwilling to deal with Tsipras at the moment as July, when Greece’s payments are due, is distant.

The ‘Wall Street Journal’ and ‘New York Times’ report on the difficulties present in the talks, with the NYT warning of possible civil unrest in Greece similar to that in the past.
