Eight fire engines, 16 firefighters and 2 foot units are operating in the area of Knossos, in Heraklion, Crete to contain a fire that broke out earlier Monday. The firefighters are trying to prevent the blaze from spreading to the settlement of Knossos, but strong winds are hampering their efforts. Residents of the settlement are taking part in the efforts to extinguish the fire with whatever means they can. The fire broke out when dry grass caught lit up in a nearby gorge and quickly spread due to the strong gusts.
