The House of Representatives in Cyprus approved with 33 votes in favour a resolution calling for the lifting of the sanctions the European Union has imposed on the Russian Federation, Thursday. The ruling party abstained from the vote.
The resolution was approved by 33 votes in favour. The ruling Democratic Rally party DYSI abstained.
Leader of DISY Averof Neophytou said Cyprus had strong ties with Russia, adding that Russia as permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has supported Cyprus’ struggle for a just and viable solution of its political problem. He underlined that the EU should re-evaluate its relations with Russia.
Parties backing the resolution noted the sanctions had failed to put an end to the Ukrainian crisis, as they had counterproductive results with escalation and more entrenchment.
The resolution calls on the Government “to work within the framework of the European Council for lifting the sanctions imposed by the European Union against the Russian Federation, pointing to the usefulness of dialogue and the need for peaceful cooperation in all fields”.
