In villages, the traditional kafeneion is a calming gathering spot where people can enjoy a strong cup of coffee. Traditionally, a male domain, the villagers would converse about politics and gossip over a game of tavli (backgammon) while their wives did the housework and tended to the kids. Up until a few decades ago there were at least two in every village – one for every political and football faction – so as to avoid friction.

Here are some remnants of village cafes that stand untouched through time.

At Akanthos, Kalarrytes, you can find the most satisfying spoon sweets served here since the Sixties.

Anna Na Ena Milo (Anna Here’s an Apple) at Milies in Pilios is named after a line in an old Greek primary school reader. The decor is covered in posters from old advertisements.

The walls of Bournaos at Paxoi are covered with old musical instruments, retro photos, shells and customers enjoy the aroma of basil as they drink their coffee.

Syndagma Square (Constitution Square) is the name of this kafeneion owned by Manolis Skoulas, that isn’t in downtown Athens but at Anogeia on Crete.

Kafeneio Drakaki on the isle of Sifnos is part of the history of the island as many of the region’s political meetings took place here. People of arts and letters have also frequented this cafe and there are photos on the walls to prove it.

Kyra Vouli (Mrs. Parliament) at Ano Doliana Parnonas has a beautiful view, delicious sweets and fine home-made liqueurs as well as coffee. You can come here to learn about the history of the place with old Greek songs playing in the background.

Time has stood still at Panellionion in Amfissa in the year 1936 when the cafe was created. It’s like a step back in time. Some of the most talented Greek actors have staged works at this cafe’s small theater.
