Around 1,000 members of the Muslim community gathered in downtown Athens on Sunday to march at Omonia Square in celebration of the birthday of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

The Muslims created a safety cordon around the crowd to prevent any possible problems.

In the past clashes had broken out between PAOK fans travelling to Athens for a football match and Muslims who were celebrating the same holiday.
