A Greek photographer’s perspective with haunting images of Greek traces abroad

Greek photographer Georgios Makkas enjoys finding the Greek abroad, whether it be an old Greek school in Istanbul or photos from Albania and his focus is tinged by his own personal perspective

Newsroom August 26 11:34

Greek photographer Georgios Makkas is based in Athens but travels the globe looking for good stories. He enjoys finding the Greek abroad, whether it be an old Greek school in Istanbul or photos from Albania.

Here are photos of the Galata Rum School – officially Ozel Karakoy Rum Ana ve Ilkogretim Okulu – at 25 Kemeralti Caddesi, Karakoy, that closed in 1985 because of lack of pupils.

From Tatava to Kurtulus features the neighborhood of Tatavla in Istanbul, now known as Kurtulus – one of the wealthiest and largest Greek orthodox parishes of Istanbul. Once known as “little Athens” (“Kucuk Atina”) there are just traces of Greece…

He contributes to Greek magazines as well as international magazines, newspapers and work on private commissions. His work has appeared at Frommer’s Travel Guides, IEEE Spectrum, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph, look, The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Mail and other publications all around the world. His photos are always tinged with his own personal prospective of a place.

Here’s a woman from North Epirus in her field in Albania, just 20 km north of where he was born, an area he enjoys exploring with his camera because he knows that his life would have been different had he been born just a short distance away, over the Albanian border.
