According to an announcement released on Monday, a record number of containers were handled in July at Terminal 1, which is run by the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP).
More specifically, a total of 50,517 containers were handled, which is the most during a single month in OLP’s history.
Management also revealed that productivity at Terminal 1 has increased by about 40% since 2009, with 161 containers now being processed during each shift rather than 115.
The data were announced to the journalists at the official ceremony to welcome the Panama-flagged container ship “MSC London”, the largest cargo vessel ever to dock in the port of Piraeus.
The “MSC London” was built in 2014 and is 399 meters long, with a gross tonnage of 165,000 tons and capacity to carry up to 16,500 containers.
The ceremony was attended by Shipping and Aegean Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, Piraeus Port Authority President Yorgos Anomeritis and the head of the coast guard.
In his statements, Mr. Varvitsiotis underlined that the Piraeus Port has the infrastructure to receive even the largest container vessels.
