People of Mykonos offered rare woven art pieces from their personal and family collections for an exhibition which highlights the tapestry of the island of Winds.
The reputation of the handmade textile of Mykonos that once took a global dimension, is now endangered. Within textiles and clothing, weaving tools, photo galleries and the press of the time, the exhibition “textile of Mykonos” will be presented at the conference hall of KDEPPAM in Mykonos and aims to bring the audience back in touch with the art of the loom.
The exhibition will take place in two areas. Starting from the laboratory of KDEPPAM, will be placed the “ntelaro”, as is the local name of the loom, household textiles, weaving tools, and portraits of dozens of weavers of Mykonos in the old times.
The building house of Dede – Venier – Fountoulaki hosts mainly clothes and presents emblematic figures in the development of the textile of Mykonos. Among others, people will be able to see the first commercially woven of Th. Charakopoulos, the “Mycenaean edging” and the fashion of woven skirt, the colors of woven and reports on their creations. In the same area will be placed samples and historical characteristic weaves and Mykonos Folklore Collection, and the documentary “The ‘fado’ by Dimitri Kalfaki created on the occasion of the exhibition.
The Exhibition could not be accomplished without the historical evidence offered by the forthcoming study PLGSM by Dimitra Nazou snd Panagiotis Hatzidakis “The textile of Mykonos in the 20th century.”
The exhibition will last until the 15th of September.
