Alexis Tsipras: “Euro is not a fetish and I am not Harry Potter”

“We can not promise everything to everyone. We want to restore the major injustices made” said the leader of opposition party to the reporter Antonis Sroiter

Newsroom May 2 11:21

The president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, gave an interview to the reporter Antonis Sroiter attempting to end the debate on the currency, saying that euro is not a fetish, but also to avoid the uncontrolled growing of expectations, stressing that he is “not Harry Potter to restore in one day those that were destroyed in four years”.

“Our priority is to save the country in the euro, not to save the euro in Greece destroying the Greek society and the Greek people,” said the president of SYRIZA.

As for whether the euro is a fetish Mr Tsipras said “ Mr Sroiter I have better fetishes if your fetish is euro …”!

He also expressed the certainty that there is no issue of exiting the eurozone, clarifying, though, that if there was an issue he would say that “what is important is to save our country and not the currency. Saving the Greek people, not the currency”.

He assured that he “will negotiate strongly with European partners leading us to a sustainable outcome” and stressed that “there were no negotiations made neither from Papandreou, Papademos or Samaras”.

Mr Tsipras tried to lower expectations from a left-wing government as he committed to restore the minimum wage, but as for the pensions, he said that this will be based on the financial data during that period.

As for dismissals, he pledged to restore those that weren’t made according to the Constitution saying, though, “We can not promise everything to everyone. We want to restore the major injustices made.”.

Referring to privatizations, Mr Tsipras said that these will be further investigated. He characterized the banks issue and the government manipulations as “a criminal act accountable to law” and warned that “those who sign up will answer to court, as provided in the Constitution.”.
