George Kourounis, a Greek Canadian adventurer and documentary filmmaker, along with his partner Sam Cossman are among the first explorers to have stepped inside one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes, located in Vanuatu in the South Pacific.
Wearing special protective suits because of the extreme heat, the two men descended and ascended 400 meters into the lava filled crater of the active Marum volcano, which Kourounis described as being like a “window into hell”.
The two explorers had to deal with terrible weather, tremendous heat from the lava, and acid rain so strong that “it could have come from a car battery,” Kourounis said. In fact, he got so close to the lava that splashes of it melted a hole in his jacket and also destroyed one of his cameras.
Thankfully, the two adventurers kept the public up to date with plenty of tweets and an amazing video, which they posted on Youtube.
