The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA) is participating in the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) campaign on September 20. The global action campaign is in its 23rd consecutive year and so far, over 10 million volunteers from 152 countries have taken part since it swung into action in 1986. All up, 80,000 tons of trash from beaches and the seabed have been cleaned thanks to the efforts of volunteers from around the world.
Apart from the actual cleaning of coastal areas, volunteers record the types of marine litter and sources so that the problem can be better understood.
This year is no exception and there are numerous cleanups already scheduled in areas around Greece. Events are taking place from September 20 through to October 20.
It’s not too late to join in the fun:
1. Select a beach that you wish to clean with your friends and contact HELMEPA for a registration form. HELMEPA will then send you necessary guidelines and supporting material that includes a poster and data cards.
2. Register your event on the Campaign’s web map. The event is also announced on HELMEPA’s Facebook page.
3. Be sure to send the completed data cards on trash identification to HELMEPA following the cleanup. And don’t forget to upload photos on the internet.
