After the tragedy occurred off the coast of Samos resulting in 22 dead immigrants and more missing, a new incident was reported in the Aegean Sea involving 24 immigrants.

Early in the morning today close to Samos island and within Turkish territorial waters 24 migrants (22 men and 2 women) were rescued by the Greek Coast Guard. They were probably on a boat which sunk.

All immigrants are well and a Turkish ship is expected to arrive in order to collect them.

“A new tragedy was fortunately avoided” said the Coast Guard’s spokesman talking to SKAI TV channel and stressed that the smuggling of immigrants in our country is expected to increase.

Regarding, though, yersterday’s tragedy where a boat with immigrants sunk causing the death of many people whereas many are still missing, 36 migrants, 32 men, 3 women and one child are safely rescued so far.

However, authorities believe that dead bodies will increase. Of the 22 dead, 18 were found inside the yacht, including a mother and her baby.

The migrants were from Somalia and Eritrea, and reached a total of 65, according to the 39 migrants that survived the capsizing of the overloaded vessel.
