Large Laskarina Bouboulina graffiti depicted at Tsakos Foundation in Uruguay

The Maria Tsakos Foundation has been operating since 1971

Newsroom December 6 10:05

A huge graffiti depicting Laskarina Bouboulina, one of the Greek heroines in the 1821 War of Independence against the Ottoman Turks, is in a prominent position in the port of Montevideo, Uruguay.

The heroine of the Revolution is honoured in this way, at the entrance of the shipowner Tsakos’s Foundation, in the Latin American country. Also highlighted is the role of shipping and women in the Struggle for Independence, which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary.

Since its operation, about 4,000 students, including Uruguayan philhellenes, have been taught free Greek language, history, and culture lessons.
