Turkish media spreads fake news claiming Greece turns off sound cannons to welcome FETO members to cross the Evros borders

Yeni Safak claimed in a report that Greece had "deactivated" the Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) on the border of Evros

Pro-Erdogan Turkish media is once more is adopting fake news to discredit Greece, as the publisher of the minority newspaper Birlik and the pro-Erdogan newspaper Yeni Safak claimed in a report that Greece had “deactivated” the Long-Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) on the border of Evros, in order to allow members of the Gulen movement to take refuge in Greece.

“Greece has deactivated the deafening sound weapons used against immigrants trying to cross the Greek border, during the crossing of members of the terrorist organisation Fethullah (FETÖ), after being informed in advance”, the article says, which hosts statements by the editor of Turkish-speaking minority newspaper “Birlik” Ilhan Thaksin, who confirmed the use of sound cannons by the Greek authorities in order to prevent a mass invasion of illegal immigrants.

“These devices can transmit sound waves up to 3 km deep into the Turkish territory. When these weapons were used, there was no problem from the Greek side, so the target here is the Turkish side,” the report claims. “They start using this as a weapon as soon as there is movement at the border,” Thaksin said, provocatively arguing that the system was turned off by the Greek authorities when members of the FETO organisation, which is considered “terrorist” in Turkey, intended to cross the border.

Thaksin continues by alleging that FETO members had informed the centre in the city of Feres upon their approach to the borders. “After this information, the FETO members easily passed through Evros and sought asylum in Greece. Once the procedures in Feres are completed, they will go to Athens from Alexandroupolis airport or by road. It was known in advance how many people would come to Greece. Why are double standards applied between people, why are FETO members allowed? Greece, a member of the European Union, discriminates against people”, said the journalist Thaksin who has Greek citizenship”, the newspaper writes, referring to the unproven claims of the minority journalist who maintains open channels of communication with the Turkish consulate in Komotini.
