PM Mitsotakis: Announcements about natural gas will be made next week

Our obligation is to be active at the national & European level, he told President Sakellaropoulou - "Everything we do is measured" he assured

Newsroom September 16 01:42

Kyriakos Mitsotakis referred to the government’s plan to neutralize the adverse effects of a very harsh winter, due to the unprecedented energy crisis, at the start of his meeting with the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the Presidential Palace.

“It is our obligation to be active at the national and European level. At the national level we are implementing a plan to support electricity bills through the neutralization of the readjustment clause and the recycling of surplus profits of electricity producers. Next week, interventions will be announced to reduce the price of natural gas, there will be intervention at the pump in terms of heating oil, but also an expanded heating allowance”, said the Prime Minister.

Mr. Mitsotakis insisted that all the interventions that have been made or are about to be made constitute a framework of protection so that households can withstand the difficult winter that is coming, as he said.

As he pointed out, the government’s plan is based on two axes, firstly on supporting households and businesses and secondly on meeting the non-negotiable, as he described it, goal of fiscal adjustment: “Everything we do is measured” he pointed out.

The prime minister also made extensive reference to the axes of the plan for cheap housing for young people, young couples and students, speaking of an impressive response from young people and underlining that this is the government’s first priority.

At the European level, the Prime Minister insisted on the adoption of his proposal to impose a ceiling on international natural gas prices and not only on Russian natural gas and noted that he regrets that Brussels and EU member states have not yet managed to reach an agreement.

“The crisis burdens households and businesses and affects the weakest. I am glad that Europe is now aware of the problem and is looking for solutions”, said the President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, adding: “the surplus profits generated by electricity producers must be distributed to the weakest”.
