Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency warning for dangerous weather conditions as Storm Agneta approaches the country, placing Corfu, Paxos and coastal areas of Epirus under a red alert from Monday evening.
The updated bulletin, issued on Monday, 2 November, upgrades an earlier severe weather warning published on Saturday, 31 October, following the latest meteorological forecasts.
A low-pressure system over southern Italy is moving eastwards towards Greece, bringing intense rainfall and thunderstorms that could be accompanied by localised hailstorms and frequent lightning strikes.
The storm, named Agneta by the Italian Meteorological Service, is expected to affect Greece until Tuesday, 3 November, particularly its western and northern regions, as well as islands in the eastern Aegean.
Areas affected on Monday, 2 November
According to EMY, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast across several parts of the country throughout Monday.
- Corfu, Paxos and Epirus, particularly coastal areas, are under an orange warning, which will be upgraded to red from the evening.
- The remaining Ionian Islands are under an orange warning.
- Western Central Greece and the western and southern Peloponnese are under an orange warning.
- The Cyclades and Crete are expected to experience severe weather until late afternoon, with an orange warning in effect.
- The eastern Aegean islands, from Chios southwards, and the Dodecanese are under a red warning for intermittent severe weather until the night.
Severe weather to continue on Tuesday, 3 November
Storm Agneta is expected to continue affecting several regions on Tuesday, with the most serious conditions forecast in northern Greece and parts of the Ionian coast.
- The Ionian Islands will remain under an orange warning until midday.
- Corfu, Paxos and Epirus, particularly coastal areas, will remain under a red warning for a limited period until the morning.
- Epirus, western Central Greece and the western and southern Peloponnese will remain under an orange warning until the afternoon.
- Western Macedonia will be affected first, followed gradually by central and eastern Macedonia, including Thasos and Samothrace, Thrace and the north-eastern Aegean islands of Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lesbos. These areas will be under a red warning from the early morning until the afternoon.
- The Dodecanese will remain under an orange warning from the morning until the afternoon.
The red warnings indicate the highest level of meteorological alert, with potentially dangerous weather conditions expected.
Authorities and residents in the affected areas are advised to monitor official weather updates as the storm moves across Greece.
