US recognizes the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Jen Psaki, State Department spokesperson said, in response to questions on Turkey`s provocative moves in Cyprus’ EEZ.

“We recognize the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources within its exclusive economic zone. We continue to believe that the natural gas and oil reserves of the island, as well as all its resources, must be fairly shared between the two communities in the framework of a comprehensive settlement,” she added.

Psaki also said it was important to avoid activities which could increase tension in the region and reiterated US position on Cyprus issue stressing that US would continue to support UN efforts to reunite Cyprus in a bizonal bicommunal federation.
