Ebola is rapidly spreading as Greece is bracing itself for the possibility of an attack. In the framework of preparations, Health Ministry officials are meeting with representatives of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) on Friday to discuss measures being taken to deal with a possible Ebola epidemic.

An Isolation Intensive Unit, equipped to deal with Ebola infections, has been set on the Alert at the Sismanoglio and interconnected Amalia Fleming Hospital in Athens. The hospital is ready to treat patients who may become infected in Greece. A specially trained group of health workers are constantly updating their training and alertness on the disease since they first received the first scientific guidelines for health professionals in the early days of August.

Greek Health Minister Makis Voridis told Antenna TV station on Thursday that Greece has been ready to deal with the disease since the start of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa five months ago.

Mr. Voridis also said that directives have also been sent to airports, ports and border crossings informing staff of the symptoms they should look out for.

The Greek authorities are planning more drills over the coming days to check their preparedness in the wake of the six cases reported in Spain, suspected death of a 58-year-old British man due to Ebola at the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) and possible case at the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.

So far there have been no cases of Ebola reported in Greece. Three cases have been treated as suspected Ebola infections, however they proved to be cases of malaria.
