The horrific murder of an 84-year-old man in the working class surburb of Aigaleo, west Athens, may have been inspired by the documentary series, “Deadly Women”.Homicide detectives are investigating the scene of the crime where the unfortunate senior citizen was butchered, his body parts chopped up, burnt and thrown in the garbage in an effort to dispose of the evidence.
Police sources state that the mastermind was most likely a woman whose methodology of getting rid of the body closely resembled an episode of “Deadly Women” that had aired on Greek TV just two days earlier. It is believed that the victim knew the person who had killed him. The police have excluded the possibility of the murder motivated by an intent to rob the man as burglars usually don’t go to the effort that was required to dismember the old man’s body. In such cases, they are usually in a hurry to leave the scene of the crime.
Homicide detectives are currently gathering depositions from the elderly man’s family. They believe that the murder was the result of a personal grudge and are looking at the possiblity of more than one intruder entering the man’s apartment as it would have been difficult for one person to manage to transport the dismembered limbs to the garbage bin even though the distance wasn’t far.
The police are also gathering DNA evidence at the man’s home because he lived alone though he was visited by both his children several times a week and two other people who took care of the man due to health problems as he had had bypass surgery.
Deadly Women Episode – The episode that may have inspired the copycat murder of the elderly man was based on the killing of Illinois teenager Adrianne Leigh Reynolds that was strangled, beaten, burned and dismembered by her classmates Sarah Anne Kolb and Cory Gregory on January 21, 2005.
