ENFIA: Property tax complaints clog up online tax system

The complaints of taxpayers in Greece are a handful, but Greeks living abroad have even bigger headaches when it comes to ENFIA

Newsroom October 12 08:31

The final payment notification that was issued by the General Secretariat of Public Revenue for the single property tax (ENFIA) on Thursday shot up the number of citizens seeking to have their amounts re-evaluated.Taxisnet, the online tax system, received over 80,000 objections, so many that there was a block to the online system.

The General Secretariat of Public Revenue issued a circular detailing the main reasons for taxpayer’s objections:

1) The considered the tax unconstitutional
2) They objected to the objective values of property which was used to calculate the tax.
3) The sought a tax exemption or reduction of the tax on account of them being members of the vulnerable groups entitled to a full exemption, 50% exemption or 80% exemption.
4) They claimed to be unable to pay the tax.
5) They sought to make corrections to their E9 statements.

Greeks living abroad
The ENFIA tax is proving to be a headache to Greeks living abroad as well. The calculation of the tax uses an array of various factors that include location, size age, face on the street, use, etc. The tricky area, however, for Greeks living abroad is that property heirs are taxed whether they have probated the Will or not. Heirs who haven’t denounced the inheritance of Greek property are still taxed as non-action creates a tax obligation.
