The wedding reception took place on Saturday night - EODY's statement - Patient symptoms - Food samples collected

Newsroom June 4 05:10

The Department of Food-borne and Waterborne Diseases of the Division of Epidemiological Surveillance and Epidemiological Intervention for Infectious Diseases (EODY) reported on June 2, 2024, that several cases of food poisoning occurred following a wedding reception in Peania on the evening of June 1, 2024. The event, attended by 254 people, featured food prepared and served by a catering company.

Information indicates that 11 guests began experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis in the early hours of June 2, 2024, and were transported to four hospitals.

Hospital admission records confirmed that these 11 individuals were hospitalised, with three still receiving care and expected to be discharged today.

The primary symptoms reported were vomiting and diarrhoea, which appeared approximately two hours after the meal, served at 11:00 PM. Reports from attendees suggest around 50 people were affected, though no additional hospital admissions were noted.

The Department of Sanitary Control and Environmental Hygiene (DHS) of the PA of Eastern Attica, the PA of Western Sector of Athens, the General Department of Public Health and Social Care of the Region of Attica, and the Hellenic Food Safety Authority were promptly notified.

Teams from DHS and the Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine (DAOK) of the Western Sector of Athens conducted on-site inspections of the farm and catering area, seizing various food items (meat, vegetables, etc.).

Ten food samples from the menu were collected and sent to Thessaly PEDY for laboratory analysis. Both the results from these tests and from the cases of gastroenteritis are pending.

The Department of Food borne and Waterborne Diseases has initiated a detailed epidemiological study, and the investigation is ongoing.
