Himara: The appointed mayor by the Municipal Council has resigned, while Beleris remains in prison

In her resignation statement, Blerina Bala cites an inability to fulfill the responsibilities she took on due to "personal reasons"

Newsroom June 5 01:51

Earlier today, the interim mayor of Himara, Blerina Bala, submitted her resignation, according to information from himara.gr.

Blerina Bala was illegally appointed mayor of Himara by the Municipal Council until the next elections, while the legitimate elected mayor and candidate for the European Parliament with New Democracy, Fredi Beleris, remains imprisoned.

In her resignation statement, Bala cites her inability to fulfill the responsibilities she took on due to personal reasons.

According to Albanian electoral law, the Municipal Council of Himara will be responsible for the operation of local government until it convenes to vote and appoint a new mayor.

Bala was an active member of the Socialist Party of Himara and deputy mayor under Goro in the municipality of Himara.

The municipality of Himara was won by Fredi Beleris’ coalition in the May 2023 local elections, but he was denied the right to be sworn in and assume his duties, even from prison. Since then, the administration of the municipality has remained in the hands of the Socialist Party, despite their loss in the election.
