State Budget: Surplus of 2.35 billion euros in the first five months

Excess of 13% in state revenues - 800 million euros more were paid in taxes

Newsroom June 18 08:16

Primary surplus of 3.152 billion euros, or 2.35 billion euros higher compared to the target for the primary surplus of 802 million euros, are recorded according to the data of the General Accounting Office of the State for the execution of the state budget in the first half of 2024.

Overall, including public debt interest, for the period January – May 2024, there is a deficit in the state budget balance amounting to 580 million euros, compared to a projection of a deficit of 2.728 billion euros included in the budget proposal for the corresponding period of 2024 and a deficit of 1.116 billion euros recorded in the corresponding period of 2023.

Part of the improved performance of the primary surplus is not counted in the primary result of 2024 in fiscal terms. Specifically, an amount of 159 million euros related to revenues of the Recovery and Resilience Fund does not affect the result in fiscal terms, while a significant part of the difference in tax revenue collections amounting to 647 million euros is included in the fiscal result of the year 2023.

Therefore, the primary result in fiscal terms is significantly lower. It is noted that the above concerns the primary result of the Central Administration and not the total of the General Government, which includes the fiscal results of Legal Entities and the subsectors of Local Authorities and Social Security Funds.

Revenue from taxes amounted to 24.827 billion euros, increased by 1.443 billion euros or 6.2% compared to the target included in the budget proposal for 2024.
