Paris 2024 Olympics: Two Bronze Medals in 20 minutes for Greece

With two medals in three finals, the day concluded for Greece in rowing - Greece has now reached a total of four medals

Newsroom August 2 02:07

In a span of just 20 minutes, Greek rowers secured two new medals at the Olympic Games. Milena Kontou and Zoe Fitsiou delivered an electrifying performance in the women’s lightweight double sculls final.

Although they started well and were ahead in the first 300 meters, they were in third place after the first 500 meters, with the British and Romanian crews leading.

At around 700 meters, New Zealand joined the race equation, briefly making it seem like the gap was widening.

However, Milena and Zoe quickly increased their pace, and from 1300 meters onwards, they launched a major comeback. Entering the final 500 meters, they overtook the New Zealand crew and, with an impressive pace, not only left them behind but also began challenging the Romanians for the silver medal.

Ultimately, they finished in third place with a time of 6:49.28, with Romania second at 6:48.78 and Great Britain first at 6:47.06.

Just twenty minutes earlier, Antonis Papakonstantinou and Petros Gaidatzis delivered a fantastic race, defying predictions to celebrate a third-place finish and a bronze medal.

It was a truly remarkable achievement for the two Greek rowers, who outperformed themselves in each subsequent race, culminating in today’s success.

Antonis and Petros started excellently and, after 400 meters, took the lead in the men’s lightweight double sculls race.

Maintaining an incredibly steady pace, they held a slim lead over the Italians, reaching the 1000-meter mark in first place.

However, the Irish and Italians launched their attack there, moving ahead and leaving the Greek crew in third place.

Not only did they withstand the pressure from the other competitors trying to reach the podium, but in the final meters, they made a significant comeback to secure second place from the Italians, missing out on the gold by just a stroke.
