Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair: “Every Day Counts” with Focus on Daily Life

The government is setting a long-term strategy focused on "small victories," using the Prime Minister's appearance at the Thessaloniki International Fair as a springboard

Newsroom September 5 07:18

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s speech at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) is nearing completion, with final touches being added. The economic team has submitted their final recommendations, and discussions with Brussels are wrapping up regarding additional fiscal space beyond the already allocated €3 billion, which will enable further interventions, such as a more substantial reduction in social security contributions by 1% starting in 2025, compared to the initially planned 0.5%.

The government is also finalizing a long-term strategy, looking ahead to the 2027 elections. This strategy acknowledges the expected wear and tear of a second term and discontent among social groups due to inflation and other issues. As reported by protothema.gr, the Prime Minister’s appearance at TIF will focus on daily life, reflecting the government’s approach moving forward.

The central theme of Mitsotakis’s presence in Thessaloniki will be “Every Day Counts.” A government official noted, “Until 2027, we will not let a single day go to waste.” They emphasized that while a government producing political work will face expected challenges, a final assessment will be made at the end of the term. The government will focus on “small victories” and the speech will revolve around “what we said, what we did, and what we will do moving forward,” summarizing past achievements and making measured announcements about daily life.

The government recognizes delays in its work and worsening problems like inflation, which have increased dissatisfaction. However, they acknowledge that the New Democracy (ND) party remains a major player in the political scene, given the disintegration in SYRIZA and internal issues in PASOK. Government officials believe that right-wing leaks have plateaued, leading them to conclude that, despite challenges and dissatisfaction, the situation could still improve.

The government plans to actively engage with the public following TIF, using a revised strategy. Instead of sending teams of MPs and party officials out before TIF, they will start their outreach immediately afterward. The planned start date is next Wednesday, focusing on the seven regional units of Central Macedonia, aiming to explain upcoming government initiatives and also addressing areas beyond regional capitals.
