Greek authorities slam Turkish corvette Büyükada’s presence in Greek waters

The Turkish corvette entered Greek territorial waters at 3 a.m. on Tuesday and sailed around the Aegean until 7 a.m. on Wednesday

A Turkish Navy corvette, TCG Büyükada, entered Greek waters at 3 a.m. on Tuesday. It wailed at the Gulf of Saros, an inlet of the northern Aegean Sea north of the Gallipoli Peninsula in northwestern Turkey. It was spotted in the sea area of Kafireas Straits and continued to sail between Evia and Andros while continuing to sail southward between Kea and Kythnos, Serifos and Milos, before being spotted between Ios and Santorini at 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday where it was photographed by the governor and CEO of K2 SmartJets, Andreas Karotseris.

Initially, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias tried to play down the presence of the corvette in the Aegean but the latest series of transgressions have fueled the government’s concern. Mr. Dendias said he was not surprised by the corvette’s violation of Greek territorial waters and that Greece has become accustomed to such infringements by Turkish authorities. “No one is entitled to sail around the Aegean without us knowing exactly where they are and what they are doing,” he said, adding that a Greek frigate was monitoring the corvette.

On his part, Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos was critical of Turkey’s decision to send a seismic survey vessel off the southern coast of Cyprus that is part of the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
