Civil protection has been placed on maximum alert due to the bad weather affecting central and southern Italy.

Due to continuous rainfall, three subway stations in Rome flooded and closed today. The city sees all schools, universities and archaeological monuments also closed.

Five aircraft were unable to land due to the heavy rainfall in Rome’s Ciampino airport, which were ultimately diverted to the larger Fiumicino airport of the city.

Meanwhile, in Tuscany, heavy damage to homes and commercial businesses were caused by the rainfall, while citizens ask authorities how a nearby dam, which was completed two years ago, was destroyed by the overflow, flooding the area.

According to statements by Carrara residents, who were forced to abandon their homes, they had made complaints in the summer, to the prefecture of Tuscany of significant defects in the execution of the dam, but were ignored.

The bad weather wave is hurting Calabria and Sicily. In Catania, the second largest Sicilian city based on populace, schools remained closed while in Calabria, students will return to school on Monday.
