19-year-old Maria Jose Alvarado, Miss Honduras, was shot as she tried to escape her sister’s jealous boyfriend prior to her flight to London to compete in the Miss World beauty pageant in December. The body of the beauty queen and her 23-year-old sister Sofia Trinidad were found buried near a river at the northern city of Santa Barbara after an exhaustive police search.
Ms. Trinidad’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, confessed to the crime after he was arrested. He said that he shot the women on Thursday in a fit of jealousy before burying them.
Mr. Ruiz was detained by police along with Aris Maldonado, who helped him bury the young women after they had been shot. He shot the older sister after he saw her dancing with another man and then shot Ms. Alvarado before burying the bodies.
The two women were last seen alive in a car without a license plate leaving a birthday part on November 13.
