“Happy Name Day to Naxos, which is celebrating today! It is a great joy and fortunate coincidence that we are on this beautiful island, standing before the unique landmark of Naxos, to announce the signing of an important funding mechanism for our islands,” said Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the signing ceremony for the establishment of the Islands Decarbonization Fund. The Prime Minister emphasized that insularity requires special care from the state and noted that the government has proven its commitment to supporting islanders.

“We are bringing change and improving the lives of islanders. The fund we are presenting will enable our islands to implement the green transition. The resources will help connect the islands to the mainland’s electricity grid,” he continued.

Mr. Mitsotakis stated that this effort is of great importance for the country’s overall national strategy to turn its abundant sun and wind into a national advantage.

“I watch with concern the rhetoric against renewable energy sources coming from extreme parties. This logic is entirely flawed. Renewable energy will allow the country to achieve energy autonomy and help reduce energy costs,” the Prime Minister stressed.

“We want to use this tool so that small businesses with photovoltaic systems can also meet their production needs,” he added.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis underscored that “all this rhetoric against renewable energy is dangerous and unpatriotic because it is not patriotic to import natural gas and oil when we can harness domestic energy sources, which God has generously given us.”
