Nikos Sarganis, the legendary “Phantom” of Greek football, passed away in the early hours of Sunday in a private hospital in Athens, following a rapid deterioration in his health.

Early Life and Career

Born in Rafina on January 13, 1954, Nikos Sarganis made his debut at age 12 with Ilisiakos in 1966 and began playing as a goalkeeper at 15, after initially starting as a forward. His transition to goalkeeper came on the advice of former international goalkeeper Christos Rimbas. With Ilisiakos, he excelled in the Greek Second Division, achieving an impressive run of clean sheets.

In 1977, Sarganis joined Kastoria, making his Greek First Division debut on September 11, 1977. He played a key role in Kastoria’s remarkable Greek Cup victory in the 1979-80 season, defeating Iraklis Thessaloniki 5-2 in the final.

Olympiacos and Panathinaikos

Sarganis moved to Olympiacos in 1980, where he won three Greek championships (1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83) and one Greek Cup (1980-81). In 1985, he transferred to Olympiacos’ fierce rivals, Panathinaikos, where he played for five seasons, winning two more league titles (1985-86, 1989-90) and three Greek Cups (1985-86, 1987-88, 1988-89). His performance in the 1988 Greek Cup final, where he scored a penalty and saved two during the shootout, was legendary.

Later Career

In 1990, Sarganis joined Athinaikos, helping the team achieve a sixth-place league finish and reach the Greek Cup final for the first time. He remains the only player to have appeared in Greek Cup finals with four different clubs and the first to win the trophy with three.

Athinaikos’ Cup final run earned them a place in the 1991-92 Cup Winners’ Cup, where Sarganis shone against Manchester United, particularly in the goalless second-leg match at Old Trafford.

International Career

Sarganis earned his first Greece cap in 1980, making a spectacular debut in a 1-0 World Cup qualifying win over Denmark on October 15, 1980. His save against Alan Simonsen earned him the nickname “Phantom” from Danish journalists. He played 58 matches for Greece, retiring from international duty in 1991.

Coaching and Legacy

After retiring, Sarganis became a coach, earning a UEFA coaching license and specializing in goalkeeper training. He remained a respected figure in Greek football for his tactical insight and contributions to player development.

Political Involvement

In the 2023 Greek parliamentary elections, Sarganis was placed 10th on the PASOK-KINAL party’s national list.
