Academy of Athens: Which artists and cultural organizations received its awards for 2024

Awards were presented last night

The visual artist Alexis Kyritsopoulos, pianist David Nachmias, author Eleni Priovolou, the Hellenic Youth Symphony Orchestra (ELSON), the German Archaeological Institute of Athens, and the Cultural Group “Archipelago” were among the winners of the Academy of Athens’ 2024 awards, presented last night during the festive session.

The President of the Academy, Mr. Stamatios Krimizis, delivered a speech titled “The Debate between Theory and Observations: The Case of the Shape of the Heliosphere,” while the General Secretary, Mr. Christos Zerefos, read the report on the Academy of Athens’ work for the year 2024.

Afterward, medals, awards, and honorary distinctions were presented to the honorees of the Academy of Athens:

  • Golden Medal of the Second Class of Letters and Fine Arts of the Academy of Athens, to the German Archaeological Institute of Athens (GAIA), for 150 years of distinguished presence in Greece.
  • Silver Medal of the Second Class of Letters and Fine Arts of the Academy of Athens, to Mr. Alkiviadis N. Tattos, for his decisive contribution to developing remarkable cultural activity in Andros.
  • Silver Medal of the Second Class of Letters and Fine Arts of the Academy of Athens, to Mr. Dimitris Filippidis, Emeritus Professor at NTUA, for his systematic scientific research, inspired university teaching, extensive body of written work, captivating lectures, highly functional articles, and his overall presence and calm influence in the social field of architecture and urban planning.
  • Award of the Academy, without corresponding announcement, of the Third Class of Moral and Social Sciences, to the Holy Metropolis of the Princes’ Islands for the book titled “Centenary Commemorative Volume 1924–2024”, published by the Apostolic Ministry of the Church of Greece, Athens, 2024, and for the significant testimony of the publication concerning the detailed documentation of the living Greek presence in the Princes’ Islands.

Poetry Award, to Giannis Stigas for “Sonderkommando”, Agra Publications, 2023. The award is accompanied by a monetary prize of €5,000.


SECOND CLASS OF LETTERS AND FINE ARTS

  • G. Athanas Award, with a monetary prize of €1,500, for the best-published poetry collection by a young poet, preferably, to Mr. Dionysios Christoforatos for his work titled “The Magical Optilos”, Kapa Publishing, Athens, 2023, 90 pages.
  • Lambros Porphyra Award, with a monetary prize of €1,500, for a Greek lyric poet for a recently published poetry collection, to Mr. Nikos Skoutas for his work titled “Floral”, Kedros Publications, Athens, 2024, 69 pages.
  • Aikaterini Stathopoulou Award, with a monetary prize of €1,500, for one of the best poetry collections published in the past three years, to Mr. Giannis Stroubas for his work titled “Perimeter”, Smili Publications, Athens, 2023, 64 pages.
  • Academy of Athens Award, with a monetary prize of €1,500, awarded biennially for the best interpretive monograph or critical edition of classical literature (Greek or Latin) published in the past three years, to Ms. Anna Lefteratou for her work titled “The Homeric Centos. Homer and the Bible Interwoven”, Oxford University Press, Oxford Studies in Late Antiquity, New York, 2023, 312 pages.
