Founded in 2004 to organize a collective system for the alternative management of portable batteries, AFIS celebrated its 20th birthday most successfully: by setting the highest recycling record in its history. 2024 was a good year, as it managed to recycle 1,400 tons of batteries, far surpassing the previous record of 1,045 tons in 2023.
In a year when the European sustainability target was set at 45% of the battery market, AFIS reached 55%, giving Greece the top spot in recycling as well. Another success of the company, which is also reflected in “pure numbers”, is that in 2024 we saw it, literally, everywhere. With more than 75,000 battery collection points across the country, AFIS was collecting around 227,699 batteries every day, i.e. more than 30,000 collections per year, showing us the way to sustainability. A battery “does not die”, on the contrary, in the special recycling bins it finds its way to eternity.
Even more is planned for 2025 and even higher, “green” targets have been set. The coming year finds AFIS stronger and more committed to ecological progress. Its goal is to continue to provide the right tools and information so that everyone can recycle easily and efficiently. At the same time, it is committed to promoting sustainability and rewarding collective successes, just as it did in 2024 through many actions.
What were they? The School Rewards program, which continued for the 4th year, is the first action. The information and awareness of students started 4 years ago and will continue until the summer of 2025. Now, they can participate in elementary, kindergarten, and high schools. The second action concerns the 18,000 euros given in 6-euro AB Vassilopoulos cheques. From July 2024, AFIS is distributing money and in this way says “thumbs up” to those who recycle their batteries. The 600,000 recycling boxes distributed to the public for free to become more sustainable without even having to leave home is the third action.
2024 ended on a positive note and a practical demonstration of our care for the environment. 59,600,000 batteries were recycled, which if placed next to each other would cover the distance between Athens and Madrid! Another important action was the planting of 667 trees in a former landfill site in Peania, in collaboration with Kotsovolos and the React project, to make our city a little greener. For the 2nd year, Basketaki disabled is supported and many content creators pass the message of battery recycling to the public in their way, in a direct, interactive, and timely way. The company practiced its motto which is none other than “Together we create change” and made all of us, and each of us individually, participants in its work.
Each of us, each of us, has been a part of the work of all of us, and we have made each other and every one of us a part of it.
Recognizing that even a single battery can make a difference, AFES invites us all in 2025 to become part of this effort for a better today and a more sustainable tomorrow. All we have to do is accept the invitation and leave our own “green” footprint on the planet.
