Chania: The 45-year-old who caused the Souda car accident has a serious criminal record

The 45-year-old businessman who killed 22-year-old Panagiotis had dozens of pending legal cases

Newsroom January 14 08:20

Not one, not two, but dozens of pending cases with the law appear to exist for the 45-year-old businessman alleged to have caused the fatal car accident in Chania, claiming the life of 22-year-old Panagiotis.

Convicted for drunk driving
According to reports, the 45-year-old was convicted in 2018 by the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Chania to 10 months in prison, with a three-year suspension, for being caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, he was fined €1,200, and his driver’s license and license plates were confiscated. Back in 2002, the same court sentenced him to 30 days in prison for violating the Highway Code.

Two arrests
Police sources reveal that the 45-year-old, who reportedly had a passion for fast and expensive cars, had been arrested twice: in 1995 for traffic violations and in 2006 for violating drug laws.

Facing charges for domestic violence
He is also embroiled in ongoing legal disputes with his estranged wife. Aside from their custody battle over their child, he faces ex officio criminal charges for domestic violence, as claimed by his wife in a petition submitted to the Single-Member Court of First Instance of Chania, where she sought sole custody of their daughter.

“Throughout our marriage, my ex-husband was violent, subjecting me to psychological and physical abuse, often in front of our child. Because of his behavior, I sought police assistance many times. However, most of the time, he managed to convince me with tears not to press charges. Nevertheless, criminal charges for domestic bodily harm are already pending against him. Beyond his violent behavior, he spends his days at gyms taking substances that make him even more aggressive. Life in our home has become hell. At the mere sound of his car engine, we all tremble. My protests are met with violence, insults, and threats. He has sabotaged all my employers, ensuring I was fired from every job I found.”

The 45-year-old now faces the felony charge of dangerous driving.
