Traffic accident on the Patras – Pyrgos road: Car collided with a bus and was “pinned” in protective barriers – A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life

From the violent collision, the 25-year-old's car was reduced to a mangled heap of metal – Rescuers worked for over an hour to free him

Newsroom January 16 09:53

A serious traffic accident occurred yesterday afternoon on the national road between Pyrgos and Patras, near Kapelletos.

A 25-year-old man from Amaliada is hospitalized in critical condition at the General University Hospital of Patras, “Panagia i Voitheia,” following a violent collision that turned his car into an unrecognizable mass of twisted metal.

The accident occurred under unclear circumstances. The young man, driving a black BMW, reportedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane over the protective bollards, and collided with a KTEL Kefalonia bus traveling toward Kyllini. Fortunately, the bus was not carrying any passengers.

The car’s destructive path didn’t end there: it crashed into the protective barriers and a streetlight pole, leaving behind a scene of utter devastation.

Battling to Free the Driver for Over an Hour
The rescue operation to free the 25-year-old was a Herculean effort. Firefighters from the Lechaina Fire Department fought against the clock and the mangled wreckage. For more than an hour, they struggled to extricate the driver, who remained trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

“Tsitsipas was not driving the car,” says the tennis star’s lawyer about the Lotus caught at 210 km/h on Attiki Odos

They eventually succeeded in freeing him and rushed him to the Rio Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The bus driver was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, mostly for precautionary reasons and medical evaluations.

The dramatic scene of the accident was exacerbated by the severe weather conditions in the area. Slippery roads and poor visibility made driving treacherous and complicated the rescue operation.

Closing Note
This particular stretch of the national road has often been labeled a “trap,” and this accident once again highlights the persistent issues with the road network. Authorities are continuing their investigation to shed light on the circumstances that led to this shocking incident. The 25-year-old is fighting for his life, and the accident serves as another stark reminder of the need for vigilance and improvements in road safety in the area.
