Two boats with 50 migrants arrive in Sfakia and Gavdos

Migrants disembark themselves on beaches

Newsroom January 20 09:18

Two boats carrying approximately 50 migrants in total arrived in Sfakia and Gavdos this afternoon, with authorities overseeing their handling.

In the first case, 20 migrants, according to information from the Coordinating Center shared with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (AMNA), arrived and disembarked on their own on a beach near Chora Sfakion, specifically at the location known as Plakaki.

All of them are adults, who are being transported to be sent to Athens.

In the second case, 30 migrants disembarked, according to Gavdos Mayor Lillian Stefanaki, who told AMNA they landed in the wider area of the Lighthouse “on a rocky, hard-to-reach spot, and we are baffled as to how they even got there.” A deputy mayor and the sole coast guard officer stationed on the island escorted them to a building owned by the Gavdos Port Authority “… for overnight accommodation, where they were provided with food. Tomorrow at noon, they will be transported by ferry to Sfakia and then moved on to Chania,” Stefanaki stated.

The mayor also voiced her concerns, emphasizing that, as she said, “we are essentially managing the migration issue without any support, not even for the expenses required to help these people. I am waiting for the state to take action.”
