The installation of the municipality of Chania’s new, smart, modern traffic lights has begun, set to be installed at key locations in the city.

The process began at the intersection of Markou Botsari and Apokoronou streets with the installation of the smart traffic light system. According to the municipal authorities, this is a new intelligent traffic signal system that includes a central telemonitoring and dynamic management platform. Additionally, it comes with state-of-the-art equipment that will be placed at 15 signalized intersections, modern traffic detectors with cameras, and dynamic traffic light operation based on actual traffic flow.

At the same time, pedestrian touch devices with audio signals and countdown timer units will be installed at the intervention points on pedestrian signals. This will ensure, for the first time, as explained by officials from the municipal technical services department overseeing the work, safe and uninterrupted passage for individuals with visual impairments.

The intervention points are as follows: Markou Botsari – Apokoronou / Kissamou – Skalidi / Margouniou – Kydonias / Skalidi – Chalidon / Kydonias – Sfakianaki – Karaiskaki – Chatzimichali – Tzanakaki – Pl. Work will continue tomorrow at the intersections of N. Foka – An. Papandreou and Tzanakaki – Pl. El. Venizelou. During the work at these intervention points, for the period the traffic signals are not operational, the rules of the Highway Code will apply. Thus, drivers and pedestrians are urged to exercise particular caution.

As informed by the municipal authorities, the work is part of the project “Integrated Smart Traffic Signal System” under Contract A/A2 “Smart City Actions in the Fields of Sustainable Mobility and E-Governance of Chania Municipality,” which is part of the “Greek Smart Cities: Investments in SSC Infrastructures and Systems for a Sustainable & Green Urban Future” project. The project is funded with an amount of 329,108 euros from the Recovery and Resilience Facility “GREECE 2.0”.
