A 16-year-old student has been arrested by Turkish authorities for allegedly insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by accusing him of corruption, local media report.
The incident took place in the city of Konya, in Central Turkey. The young boy, who was identified as M.E.A., was delivering a speech at an event organized to commemorate Mustafa Fehmi Kubilay, a Turkish teacher and lieutenant in the Turkish army who was killed by a pro-sharia group in 1930 in Menemen.
During this speech, he reportedly characterized Erdogan as a leader of corruption and bribery, making specific reference to his unlicensed palace.
The young boy faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted on charges of insulting the president, as provided by the Turkish Criminal Code.
