According to reports from ERT, an electric locomotive had been left in Idomeni due to a malfunction in its bogie system, which includes the wheels. A diesel-powered train was dispatched to retrieve it and transport it for repairs. However, as it reached Polykastro, excessive pressure was exerted on the railway tracks, causing them to shift and resulting in the derailment.

Hellenic Train stated that there was no danger to the safety of its crew and that it is working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the causes of the derailment.

Meanwhile, sources cited by ERT indicate that the railway line serving international routes via Skopje, where the derailment occurred, is expected to remain closed for approximately two months for repairs. During this period, all international routes will be rerouted through Bulgaria.
