The Hellenic Initiative Partners with Fainareti to support new families in Greece

THI’s Donation to Baby Bank program assists families in extreme need

Newsroom February 18 02:05

Falling birth rates in Greece have made supporting young families a national priority. The Hellenic Initiative (THI) is helping to create a brighter future by supporting the Baby Bank program of the nonprofit Fainareti.

Fainareti, named after the mother of the philosopher Socrates -a midwife- was founded in 2006 to promote the well-being of women, especially during pregnancy, and to support families across Greece. Through a dedicated team of 15 professionals, including midwives, psychologists, psychiatrists, and physical trainers, Fainareti provides vital research, intervention, and care to women and their families nationwide.

Fainareti’s initiatives include Greece’s first Day Center for Perinatal Mental Health, a Perinatal Mental Health Helpline, and a telehealth program supporting pregnant women and new parents, particularly those living on remote Greek islands.

THI’s grant helps underwrite the cost of a Project Manager for the Baby Bank, which provides essential baby items to families in extreme need.

Founded in 2012, THI is a global non-profit organization that brings together Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece through programs focused on economic development and crisis relief. Since its founding, THI has raised more than $37 million and has grown to be the largest Greek Diaspora organization in the world. More information is available at www.thehellenicinitiative.org.

According to Vasilis Daglas, Fainareti’s Executive Director, “thanks to the generous support of The Hellenic Initiative, Fainareti’s Baby Bank has already distributed over 15,000 essential items (clothes, toys, shoes, strollers, beds, consumables, etc.) to 231 families with 356 children.” All items are distributed free of charge to children from birth to 5 years old.

George P. Stamas, THI’s Board President, stated, “Strong nonprofits do more than just provide goods and services—they inspire positive change. Fainareti fosters community and social solidarity through its partnerships, parental support networks, and commitment to volunteers”

Andrew N. Liveris, THI’s Board Chairman, stated: “THI always looks for multiplier effects. By collecting and distributing gently used baby items and equipment, Fainareti not only provides financial relief to vulnerable families but also promotes sustainability through the reuse and recycling of essential childcare items.”
