How Athens will celebrate Tsiknopempti – Events at Varvakeios and Kotzia square

Tsiknopempti 2025 in Athens: The events of the municipality in Varvakio and Kotzias Square - Music, free food and traditional events

Newsroom February 20 12:11

Today, February 20, is Tsiknopempti, and the Municipality of Athens invites citizens to join the celebrations in the city center, featuring plenty of music, free food at Varvakeios Market Square, and traditional festivities, perfectly in tune with the Athens Carnival atmosphere.

With events that combine tradition, music, and merriment—just as a carnival should—the Athens Municipality’s Organization for Culture, Sports, and Youth is calling on residents and visitors to celebrate Tsiknopempti on February 28 in the heart of Athens.

Starting at 1:00 PM, events will take place at central locations known as classic Tsiknopempti hotspots, aiming to immerse the public in Greek Carnival traditions and get everyone moving to the rhythm of the festivities.

A More Detailed Look at the Events:

  • The Bacchae Dance Art Group will parade in traditional costumes with percussion instruments, starting from Syntagma Square (1:00 PM) and making their way to Plaka (Route: Syntagma Square → Ermou pedestrian street → Monastiraki Square → Plaka).
  • The Kinitiras Artistic Network will stage theatrical carnival performances inspired by famous Greek carnivals, kicking off from Asomaton Square (1:00 PM) and making stops at various locations in the city center (Asomaton Square, Psyrri Square, Varvakeios Market, Agia Irini Square).
  • The Athens Municipality’s Greek Music Workshop, featuring singers Dora Loizou and Manolis Skoulas, will bring their live music to Monastiraki Square (1:00 PM), adding to the festive atmosphere and keeping carnival-goers in high spirits.
