Fugitive terrorist Christodoulos Xiros was arrested at Anavyssos in the Attica region on Saturday. The Anti-Terrorist Squad reported that he was armed at the time of his arrest though he did not put up a struggle. During the time of his arrest, his hair was blond, he had a beard and he wore glasses and a hat.
Investigations at the home he had been arrested in had begun following information that a well-known terrorist known as “Manolis” of the Revolutionary Organization 17 November (17N) had rented a house with fake identification.
The police managed to find him after a year on the run when he disappeared after a 9-day furlough on January 5, 2014. Dressed in a black cape he managed to escape from Chalkidiki and disappeared somewhere in Athens. He left his cell phone behind in his family home.
Mr. Xiros wore a black cape and arrived in Athens late at night. Sources state that he had expressed his intent to escape from prison to his brother Vasilis.
On January 21, 2014, a video had appeared featuring the terrorist from the well known November 19 group justifying his escape from prison.
Recently, there were fears that a new hit would come to coincide with the pre-election period.
The 17N Terrorist Group
The 17N group was a Marxist urban guerrilla organization formed in 1975 and believed to have been disbanded in 2002 after the arrest and trial of a number of its members. The gruop assassinated 23 people in 103 attacks on targets from the United States, United Kingdom, Turkey and Greece. They were named after the day of the 1973 Athens Polytechnic Uprising against the military junta. The group’s identity was first made known following the capture of Savvas Xiros on June 29, 2002, after a failed bombing attempt on the Minoan Flying Dolphins ferry company in Piraeus. The interrogation led to the arrests of six more suspects including two brothers of Savvas Xiros.
