Both the European Central Bank and the Bank of Greece are monitoring carefully the depositors’ behavior today, as November 7 is considered a crucial day, marking the end of the holiday season and the citizen’s return to the rhythms of everyday life.
According to the Greek banks analysts the next two week are particularly critical, due to the increased risk for a bank run ahead of the national elections to be held on January 25, as it happened during the election campaign of 2012.
However, what makes today’s bank performance even more important, is the fact that bankers were taken by surprise by what happened on Monday. Although January 5 was the last day for the payment of vehicle circulation tax and several other taxes and the banks were expecting increased withdrawal traffic, no one could have predicted that depositors in Greece would withdraw 600 million euros in total.
Today’s bank performance will reveal whether the increased withdrawal traffic on January 5 was the result of high taxation or a general trend in view of the elections. It should be noted, however, that last Monday was not even the worst day in terms of cash withdrawals. According to information, the negative record to date for deposits was recorded the day the parliament failed to elect a President of the Republic.
