Former Metropolitan of Thessaloniki Anthimos passes away at 91

On April 26, 2004, he was elected Metropolitan of Thessaloniki and resigned in August 2023

Newsroom March 13 11:21

Metropolitan Anthimos, formerly of Thessaloniki, passed away this morning at the age of 91. He departed this life in his private quarters at the Metropolis of Thessaloniki, as his health had significantly deteriorated in recent days.

Born Dionysios Roussas in Salmoni, Pyrgos, Ilia, in 1934, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens in 1957 and later from its Theology School in 1963.

His journey in the Church began in 1964, when he was ordained deacon by Metropolitan Gabriel of Thira. A year later, in 1965, he was ordained a priest, receiving the second degree of priesthood. During this time, he also served as an editor of the weekly bulletin “Voice of the Lord” from 1965 to 1972, contributing to the dissemination of ecclesiastical teachings.

On July 14, 1974, he was ordained Metropolitan of Alexandroupolis at Saint Basil’s Church in Athens. The ordination was led by Metropolitan Gabriel of Thira, with the participation of Metropolitans Sotirios of Gytheio, Dionysios of Drama, and Agathonikos of Mesogaia.

His tenure in the Metropolis of Alexandroupolis lasted nearly three decades, during which he tirelessly worked to strengthen the Orthodox faith, establish charitable institutions, and support his congregation.

In 2004, following the passing of his predecessor, he was elected Metropolitan of Thessaloniki by the Holy Synod, assuming leadership of one of the most significant Metropolises in Greece.

During his time in Thessaloniki, Anthimos actively engaged in both spiritual and social affairs. He strongly defended traditional values, frequently voiced his opinions on major national and social issues, and highlighted the role of the Church in modern Greek society. Additionally, he focused on preserving and restoring ecclesiastical monuments in the city while supporting the local community through charitable initiatives.

After 19 years at the helm of the Metropolis of Thessaloniki, Metropolitan Anthimos submitted his resignation on August 7, 2023. The resignation was accepted by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece on August 25, 2023.

Since then, he had been residing in the Metropolis, continuing to pray and offer spiritual guidance to those who sought his counsel. Despite facing health challenges in his later years, he remained spiritually strong and devoted to Orthodoxy.
