Subsidence in Orthyos Tunnel after Lianokladi – train traffic adjustments

Repair works are underway to restore the damage – The subsidence was caused by unstable ground conditions in the wider area following storm “Ianos”

Newsroom March 21 06:20

Serious disruptions to train traffic have occurred due to subsidence in the Orthyos Tunnel, located after Lianokladi and just before Domokos. For safety reasons, train movement before and after the tunnel has been restricted to a single track.

According to reports, the subsidence was triggered by soil instability in the region following the impact of storm “Ianos.”

Teams from OSE (Hellenic Railways), ERGOSE, and the tunnel’s construction company have rushed to the site to assess and repair the damage. Additionally, a team of scientists from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is conducting measurements every six hours, while full restoration work is expected to begin in the coming days.

During this period, trains will operate at reduced speeds, not exceeding 40 km/h.

It should also be noted that, due to the absence of remote signaling control, train traffic between Domokos and Larissa is currently limited to a single track.
