Marine Le Pen, the leader of the French extreme right National Front party reshuffles the political deck in France while the socialist government of Francois Hollande is searching for ways to remain in power until the scheduled presidential elections of 2017. At the same time, the French Right puts blame on its leader, Francois Cope for not rising to the occasion and the French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, rejects Marine Le Pen’s proposal for dissolution of the French National Assembly.
Who would have thought that in France, a country marked by the events of May 1968, one in three young people would vote for the far-right “National Front”? It should also be noted that, according to Liberation newspaper that drew Le Pen’s voters’ profile, the far-right party has many supporters amongst the French workers.
Marine Le Pen’s triumph has caused a political earthquake in France while the Right wing and the Socialists are trying to regroup. Hollande’s government suffered a historic defeat in yesterday’s elections, receiving only 14.3%. In an attempt to win back the Socialist voters, the French Prime Minister, Manuel Valls, is planning to announce new tax cuts in the next few hours.
Le Pen’s victory was also commented on by the White House in Washington. According to reports, Obama has characterized the success of the French far right a “very big issue”.
It should be noted that the NF party participated in the French National Elections for the first time in 1984, when it was led by its founder, Jean- Marie Le Pen and it won 10.9% of the vote, while today it is the first party in France.
Marine Le Pen is now pulling the strings at the political scene of the country, according to the French press. For the newspaper “Le Figaro”, the greatest strength of the French extreme Right’s leader is the tough immigration policy adopted by the party and the fact that the country is ruled by a spiritless leader, whose love life draws too much attention from the big problems of France, such as poverty and unemployment.
For the newspaper “Le Monde”, the fact that Le Pen received a higher rate than the one forecasted by the opinion polls, ‘stealing’ voters even from the Socialist Party, threw François Hollande into panic and caused the French Right to turn to Nicolas Sarkozy and almost beg him… to return to the political scene.
From Paris, the French Prime minister Manuel Valls replied negatively to Marine Le Pen’s request, i.e. the dissolution of the National Assembly. At the same time, the French “Le Figaro” says in an article that, unfortunately, Mr Hollande has proved the best politician to rally voters… of the French far right.
