Tourist submarine sinks off Egypt – Six dead, nine injured

The submarine was carrying a total of 44 passengers - Five people remain trapped on the boat, local sources say - The Russian embassy in Egypt says all the tourists were from Russia, without specifying their identities

Six people died today, Thursday, when a tourist submarine sank off Egypt, while nine others were injured, four of whom are being treated in critical condition, according to local media.

The submarine, named Sindbad, which was conducting sea tours off Hurghada, was carrying a total of 44 passengers.

So far, rescue services have managed to save 29 people, according to Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm.

The Red Sea Security Directorate received a report of the sinking of the tourist submarine, which occurred in front of the marina of a “well-known hotel”, which has not yet been named by local media.

A total of 21 ambulances were sent to the scene of the accident and are transporting the injured to local hospitals due to the seriousness of their condition.

The 44 passengers are of different nationalities and were on a sea excursion to admire Egypt’s coral reefs and tropical fish.

This submarine has been conducting tourist tours in Hurghada for several years.

According to Sharm Hurghada Excursions, the underwater tour lasts three hours and costs £68 for adults and £35 for children.

So far, the cause and exact circumstances of the sinking have not been confirmed or officially announced.
