Chaos in Venezuela continues. However, authorities claim to have found a way to diminish the long queues forming outside grocery stores and supermarkets, by… removing most of the people standing in line!
In order to reduce the amount of citizens in queues, Nicolas Maduro and his government have instituted a new rule which only allows Venezuelans to visit government grocery stores or supermarkets twice a week, according to Bloomberg.
It has been a week already since thousands of people queued up outside shops, trying to buy whatever they could, after a crisis escalated due to the lack of foreign currency. Said crisis led Nicolas Maduro’s Interior Minister to place military and security forces outside grocery stores and supermarkets, in order to safeguard the situation.
The “food police” chased off many a potential buyer after the newly instituted rule which allows people with specific digits on their Identity Cards, to buy on certain days.
While government sources claim that there would not be long lines if supermarkets were not full, Maduro recognizes that many basic items are missing, which – as he stated- is due to the economic war that his enemies are waging against him, trying to overturn his socialist government.
Despite the new rules, endless lines continue to form outside private markets, where there is no limit to the amount of potential shoppers, while the situation is expected to escalate further.
